20 data points evaluated per bike

The NordicTrack Commercial VR21 with high-backed seat is a comfortable, low-impact exercise bike. It is the entry-level model in the NordicTrack Commercial Series. This series is meant for home use (not commercial use); it is named after its commercial-gauge steel frames. The top-of-the-line model in the series is the VR25.

Compared with other affordable recumbent bikes, the VR21 is above average in many ways. One important point is that the resistance system is very smooth for the price class. It features 25 levels of digital resistance from a 20 lb. flywheel. Also key to this bike’s appeal are the 32 onboard workout programs and iFit Coach readiness.

Here are some pros and cons to consider.

The Great

  • Recumbent Frame: Compared with upright stationary bikes, recumbent bikes like the VR21 allow less stress on your back and lower body. You lean back and pedal with your legs extended in front of your body — not beneath it — for lower impact cross training.
  • Ventilated Seat with Lumbar Support: NordicTrack recumbent bike seats look similar to comfortable office chairs with high backs for support. The seat back on the VR21 is ventilated (mesh material) and the seat itself can be adjusted fore and aft to fit different riders.
  • 32 Workout Apps: Save time planning and get a pro workout every time. This bike console’s 32 workout apps for calorie burn, performance and endurance take the guesswork out of indoor bike training. Just choose a goal category, select a program and start riding.
  • iFit Coach Ready: NordicTrack bikes that are iFit Coach Ready can connect with iFit Coach through your own compatible tablet computer or smartphone. iFit Coach memberships bring a wide variety of fitness related benefits: customized fitness plans, simulated outdoor training with Google Maps, automated data logging, help with menu planning and much more.
  • Tablet Holder: There’s an integrated tablet holder for your tablet or smartphone if you plan on using this for iFit or entertainment during workouts.
  • 25 Resistance Levels: Get a precisely-tuned challenge with the VR21’s 25 digital resistance settings. The force comes from the 20 lb. inertia-enhanced flywheel.
  • Extra-Wide Pedals: The foot pedals are extra-wide for comfort and have adjustable straps for stability.
  • Heart Rate Monitoring: The VR21 is compatible with a Bluetooth chest strap (sold separately) for wireless heart-rate monitoring. It also has grip pulse sensors on the handlebars.
  • Self-Adjusting Fan: For smart climate control NordicTrack installs AutoBreeze workout fans on its cardio trainers; an AutoBreeze fan can automatically adjust to your workout intensity. You can also keep the fan breeze at a constant setting.
  • Water Bottle Holder: A water bottle holder is integrated with the bike frame.
  • Transport Wheels: Transport wheels are mounted to the frame so you can easily move the Commercial VR21 after workout time.
  • High Capacity: The VR21 has a maximum user weight capacity of 350 pounds.
  • Good Warranty: The home warranty is good enough for the price point. It includes 10 years of coverage for the frame, 2 years for parts, and 1 year for labor.

The Not-So-Great

  • Maintenance Required: Names can be misleading. The NordicTrack Commercial VR21 isn’t a commercial bike; it’s a residential bike. To keep this trainer running smoothly and quietly, you might need to occasionally tighten the bolts and add a lubricant.
  • Customer Service: The manufacturer has a poor reputation for customer service. This could be a problem if your bike needs a replacement part or a pro check-up.
  • Labor Warranty: Although the warranty as a whole is OK, if we zoom in on the 1-year labor warranty, this is a bit short for our liking.

Who Should Use The NordicTrack Commercial VR21 Recumbent Bike?

The VR21 is easy to mount/dismount and can hold up to 350 pounds. It is best matched to riders who are seeking on-board training guidance and is ideal for beginner through to intermediate-level trainees. It may also be a good match for physical rehabilitation exercise.

The Bottom Line

An affordable price, comfortable seat, and iFit readiness help make the NordicTrack Commercial VR21 a respectable option for shoppers who prioritize comfort on a budget. In exchange for the more affordable price though, keep in mind that you will have to bring your own console to this machine if you want to train interactively with a program like iFit. We feel a bit more confident recommending the higher-spec VR25. It adds a 7” HD touchscreen into the mix for iFit training as well as a 1-year membership to the program, among other updates.

The pedal arms (crank arms) are freakishly long. After owning and using this on the first day i have awful knee pain. (Im in my 20's btw) The length of the crank arms means your knees are folding and stretching far more than they should be pedalling a bike.

Hi Harry, have you tried adjusting the seat? If you feel that you are overstretching when you pedal, then your seat might be too far from the pedals.

I'm left with lots of questions. Is this a renamed version of the consumer Elite 5.4? We sat on tone today - seat is awful - the back is not adjustable and pushes you forward so only part of your butt rests on the seat. Only adjustment for seating is the off horizontal rack that goes higher as you back up and lower going forward. Stupid thing is - I used to sell them (not push them). Found the 4.7 to be a lot more comfortable. Neither has long enough straps for the foot pedals to get my feet in far enough, so I'm using the front 1/3 of my foot to pedal - not acceptable. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. FYI, this is for cardiac workout, and needed very soon.

Hi Troy, thank you for reaching out. We do understand the complications with a seat raising and becoming further away from the console, this is usually to help create the best position for your knees when pedalling. In terms of the actual pedals, these are universal so you could always switch out the pedals to something that works better for your foot size. The pedals are designed as a one size fits all which we know isn't always the case for people. The threading on pedals is the same and you can easily switch them out. I hope this helps!

Why would you have something that tries to make a potential customer feel stupid, like a pop-up rich requires one to click on "No thanks, I don't like to save". Everyone like to save (apples to apples). Trying to push a higher margin item (or a product you are paid to promote) on someone - who is on your site evaluating a purchase in that manner is pretty offensive. Just because other sites do it doesn't make it appreciated by the consumer.

Hi Todd, thank you for your feedback. The option to save is for users looking to track their workouts specifically. If more than one user in a household is using the bike, not all users may want to personally save their workout each time. Also, if riders decide to cut a workout shorter they may not be as inclined to save their workout that day. We hope this helps clarify the purpose of this function.
